I am new to mechanical watches and while winding I am having an issue with the rotor spinning wildly. The crown begins to rotate the opposite direction of normal winding. Looking for someone with some insight on this issue.

sounds like a movement issue. I had something similar a few years ago with a different brand’s model. They spun wildly in reverse, mangled the hands and the movement went as well. I would contact DIY customer service directly.
